Rehabilitation

Progressive rehabilitation and a life-of-mine approach are central to how Idemitsu Australia operates.

We are committed to restoring land to at least its pre-mining condition, and wherever possible, improving it for the long-term benefit of local communities and the environment.

We aim to restore previously mined areas through pasture and native vegetation rehabilitation including developing optimum landforms and vegetation profiles, and exploring opportunities for farming, grazing, and forestry.

Boggabri Coal rehabilitation

We are very proud of the rehabilitation achieved at Boggabri Coal, which is widely recognised for its quality and environmental outcomes. Progressive rehabilitation activities continue to re-establish pre-mining diversity values.

Rehabilitation areas now support woodland and grassland bird habitats, and newly established communities of the critically-endangered White Box Yellow Box Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland and Derived Native Grassland are flourishing.

The Boggabri Coal Independent Environmental Audit October 2023 identified:

  • The biodiversity monitoring program has identified that the native species richness within the rehabilitation areas is trending towards or exceeding the native species richness of the neighbouring analogue sites.
  • Generally, the completed rehabilitation areas are progressing towards the achievement of the proposed rehabilitation objectives, completion criteria and final landform and rehabilitation plan.
  • Exotic species diversity was recorded as being higher than analogue sites during the reporting period.

Muswellbrook Mine rehabilitation

Mining at Muswellbrook Mine concluded in December 2022 following the full extraction of coal reserves. Since then, major rehabilitation earthworks have been completed, included mulching and sowing a broad range of grass and tree seed mixes, in accordance with the mine rehabilitation obligations.

Beyond rehabilitation, we are also exploring new opportunities for sustainable post-mining land use. These projects aim to support regional economic growth and contribute to Australia’s future energy and industrial needs.

Current initiatives include:

  • Muswellbrook Pumped Hydro Energy Storage
  • Muswellbrook Clean Industries Precinct
  • Muswellbrook Solar Farm and Battery
  • Merriown Solar Farm and Battery

Restoring Muswellbrook, delivering on our commitment to rehabilitate the land.

From mining to rehabilitation, delivering lasting outcomes for Muswellbrook and its community.
